Introducing the Recycled Shoe Box

Ever wanted to recycle your egg cartons or other materials only to be rudely turned away by your city's recycling center? Well Newton Shoes has taken it a step further and designed a ergonomic shoe box that fits a pair of running shoes like a glove. It is a molded design using 100 percent post-consumer recycled material, and instead of stuffing the box with tissue, Newton packs one shoe with a pair of socks and the other with a shoe bag. Green running anybody?

My WhiteFence New Year's Resolution

Every once in a while I get the urge to share my absolutely random and fluttering thought process, so in the honor of the resolution a la New Years, well more like resolutions, I thought it would be fun to post a nice little foray (a.k.a. list). The best part is listing them, not feeling guilty when I don't keep all of them.

  1. Buy more dark chocolate
  2. Help you, our lovely readers, get more information on the products that directly impact your family. Kind of like a promise to give you valuable information on saving money, rather than selling you Tupperware that doubles as a scooter and a purse. No infomercial selling here.
  3. Find enough green tips to fill a small football stadium... err, maybe a small box would be ok? Green means go!
  4. Visit New Zealand and ride the mighty winds that Peter Jackson and Weta once rode.
  5. Switch electricity companies here in Texas and stop paying $200 electricity bills (closer to $120 this month).
  6. Teach my roommates how to use a light switch... amazing invention and all. See above.
  7. Find a way to save more money by shaving energy costs. See above... above.
  8. Devote myself entirely to L4D on Xbox 360.
  9. Try at least 50 different peanut butter and other food product combinations.
  10. Get a professional energy audit at my entirely too old and leaky home.
  11. Shop for cheaper Internet service, because I know you're out there. Stop teasing me!
  12. Find the meaning of life neatly wrapped in a flour tortilla with a giant bowl of salsa.
  13. Home phone service. Enough said.
  14. Snuggies, so I can be cool in my blanket smock. Or is it Slanket?
  15. Hopefully answer any questions you may have regarding WhiteFence, how the service works, how you can save money, and so on. I'm here to help you help yourself by getting help from WhiteFence.

Happy 2009 everyone!

Online Traffic Increases Noticeably as Shoppers Flock to Popular Sites

It seems that ever-growing popularity of online shopping sites is undeniable, at least according to a November Nielsen Online report. People are flocking to online shopping and consumer product sites that provide valuable information and advice on the latest and greatest in technology, music and games. Interestingly enough, the uptick in traffic could be attributed to several factors, but what is interesting is some of the resistance we've seen in the past to trusting online shopping versus traditional retail seems to be fading with the state of the economy.  Are consumers more confident in shopping online now, or is it a swallow-the-medicine sort of reaction?

To some degree retailers already utilize reviews to help customers find better quality products, but unfortunately most are still depending on the customers themselves to review the products, and not every item is rated. A few retailers, namely Best Buy, have implemented shopping guides to help their customers pick the products that fit a more specific criteria, but the crown of shopping expertise still belongs firmly in the laps of sites like Yahoo! Shopping, CNET, BizRate and Amazon.com.

Here are a few statistics from the release that caught my eye:

  • CNET posted a 12% growth in traffic month-over-month
  • GameStop posted a 21% year-over-year increase in users.

Now some of these statistic may seem like gibberish to some, but what it speaks to is a growing comfort level among consumers that are using sites like CNET as a resource for shopping and product advice. Better informed shoppers = what exactly? It could be an interesting trend to mark if online shopping continues it's upward trend after the holidays. How would it affect more traditional retailers who do not utilize product guides as effectively?

Eco-Friendly New Year's Resolutions

I don't know about you guys but I really need to be more green. I mean sure, I take advantage of my neighborhood curb recycling program but I know there's more I can do. So for my New Year's resolution I'm making a list of all the things I can do to be more Eco-friendly in 2009.

Being green for the new year. Here are my ideas:

  • Stop buying bottled water and use a water filter syster that attaches to my faucet.
  • Look into using clean energy for my home.
  • Purchase some renewable energy credits (RECs) to offset my carbon footprint.
  • Start using a power strip for my electronics so I can turn the power switch off and avoid wasting energy.
  • Buy cotton grocery bags so I can reuse them instead of the paper or plastic bags at the market.
  • Learn to ride the bus or carpool to work at least 3 days a week.

Do you guys have any other green ideas I can incoorporate into my 2009 plan? Please leave me a comment.

G4 Feeds Your Technology Hunger

If you're a geek like me (and I know I am), then you know all about CES in Las Vegas. Each year, technology companies from all over the world gather in Vegas, baby, to show off the stuff they're working on and give previews of the new products to be released later that year or in the years to come.

Last year, they showed off 100 inch plasma screens, impressive HD camcorders and much, much more. Since technology buffs like myself can't get enough of this info on all the new gear, TV network G4 will be picking up the serving spoon this year to dish out constant coverage on CES.

All told, G4 will have over 6 hours of live coverage of CES, "as well as 60 second interstitial updates throughout the day". In addition, there will be liveblogs feeding the tech maniac inside of you with minute-to-minute updates of the big press conferences.

To find out more about the rigorous schedule, be sure to head over to B&C. So, how many technology buffs are out there reading along?

Throwing a Green New Year's Party

It's time once again to gather with friends and family, pop open the bubbly and toast the coming year! If you're going to have a celebration at your house, make it as green as you can. Trust me, throwing a green New Year's party is easier than it sounds.

It all really depends on how Eco-friendly you want to go, but really, every little bit you do will help the environment. I've laid out some tips below, so do your part and have a Happy New Year!

  • Use invitations made from recycled products, or even better, go online and use Evite.com, the paperless way to invite folks to your gatherings.
  • Try to minimize the use of paper cups, plates and napkins. If it is a must, then use products that can be recycled.
  • Bypass the tissue paper decorations and get crafty by decorating with plants and fruits.
  • As party favors give seeds so your guests get a gift that will bloom in later months and bring back memories of your party.
  • Check out this cool site for more green party tips.

The BBB's Advice on Giving and Getting Pre-Paid Bank Cards

The BBB's Advice on Giving and Getting Pre-Paid Bank Cards There are only a precious few more shopping days until Christmas. If you are like me, it's tempting to skip the malls and the expensive postage by getting everyone on your list a gift card! While they seem like a safe and easy way to give money during the holidays, the Better Business Bureau recently had a few things to say about this popular holiday choice.

According to the BBB, billions of dollars will be spent on gift cards this holiday season and pre-paid bank cards—or stored-value cards—are expected to be very popular. These pre-paid bank cards are like gift cards, but can be used anywhere credit cards are accepted, allowing the recipient more flexibility in where the money can be spent. But the BBB warns that pre-paid bank cards aren’t without their downside.

"Cold hard cash is going to be on a lot of wish lists this year as families find it increasingly difficult to balance holiday spending with paying for essentials," said Steve Cox, BBB spokesperson. "Pre-paid bank cards can be a great way to give money, but givers and receivers need to pay special attention to the terms and conditions, which can include substantial fees and limitations."

Not only are pre-paid bank cards a popular holiday gift, they are also a way for people with limited access to credit cards to manage their money—including making it easier to purchase items online. The terms and conditions on these products do vary, so BBB recommends consumers pay special attention to the following details when giving, or receiving, a pre-paid bank card:

'Tis The Season to See Fees
BBB recently researched a bank card offer and discovered more than 27 different fees ranging from a little under a dollar to almost $20. Fees were attached to contacting customer service, loading more money onto the card, and inactivity. The card even had weekly base fees of $1.95—which ads up to more than $100 a year to use the card. BBB recommends paying close attention to all terms and conditions associated with pre-paid bank cards and is encouraging consumers to ensure they read the fine print and ask about and understand any "hidden" fees.

What Happens if the Card is Lost or Stolen
Pre-paid bank cards are often branded by major credit card companies, such as MasterCard or Visa. While credit card companies promise zero or limited liability to card holders if their credit card is stolen or lost, the same protections do not necessarily apply to stored-value cards. Again, BBB recommends paying close attention to the terms and conditions of the card, which should outline the consumer protections allotted to the holder.

Just Like a Credit Card?
In some cases, such as renting a car or reserving a hotel room, a pre-paid bank card might not be accepted. Consumers might also have a hard time using pre-paid cards when paying a deposit for larger purchases.

Some card issuers, but not many, report to a credit bureau, which means that holding a card can potentially have a positive impact on a consumer’s credit score.  Because a consumer cannot overdraw on the card or risk not paying a bill on time, there’s no way for a consumer to damage their credit by using a pre-paid bank card either.

For more information on giving and using gift cards, and on managing credit and debit cards this holiday season, go to www.bbb.org.
