While there are so many little changes you can make, we believe the following are the most important when trying to make a sizable difference when your bill arrives. Even if you don’t do all of these things to help lower your utility bills, just doing a few of them consistently will keep more money in your pocket.

  • Lower your thermostat. On average, around 43 percent or nearly half of your utility bill goes to heating and cooling your home. Because this is such a large amount, it is important to make an effort to address those things that can help you save on your heating and cooling. So, lowering your thermostat in the winter and turn it up in the summer by just a couple of degrees. Just a little change will make a difference over time.
  • Work the shades.Keep the shades pulled when the sun is shining in during the summer, (or putting window tint on the window) and open the shades during the winter to let the sunlight in so that it helps to warm the room.
  • Locate and address leaks.Because heating and cooling costs are the bulk of your bill, it is a good idea to find places you are losing heat or air conditioning and then address those leaks. Adding insulation to the attic, walls, or basement, for example, will usually help to plug the leaks and keep the heat or air from escaping the home.
  • Watch the lights. It’s a good idea to switch to energy efficient lighting. But more importantly, always make sure to turn lights off when they are not being used. If you have lights that you keep on throughout the night, such as outdoor lights, set them on a timer, so they will automatically come on and go off during those important periods, but won’t be forgotten about when you head out to work.
  • Shut it off, unplug it.Many people leave their computer going all the time, even throughout the night, when it is not being used, and it is costing you. Save energy by shutting down the computer each night. Also, unplug electric devices that are not in use, such as the toaster. Even if they are not being used, yet are still plugged in, they are using energy and adding to your monthly bill.
  • Reduce hot water usage.Heating up water will add to your utility bills. To save on this, wash your clothes in cold water, and make sure that your water heater is running efficiently.
