Piece of Cr-Apple!   September 30, 2008

OK, so I bought the extreme because the wife was experiencing very slow download speeds with the Linksys wireless router and Apple promised lightning fast speed/downloads. The extreme delivers when it works, no doubt. I own a Macbook Pro and the set up was easy. I experienced similar problems with the wireless network randomly dropping. I would wake up in the morning and it would be off, so I would replug it and it would work for an unknown period of time before it dropped again. I returned it twice to the Apple store and they gave me another one (total of 3). I've replaced everything: the DSL modem, ethernet cable, phone cord to the DSL modem, I even had the Road Runner guys come to my house to check for faulty wiring within the walls. I love Apple products, but this has caused me more heartache and wasted hours than I want to admit.

It works fine with ethernet, but as other reviews mention, the point is to be wireless! I scoured through the discussion forums and tried every reset known to man to get this thing to work. No joy. So now it sits there next to my modem like a big white paper weight-how depressing.

Best Router I've ever owned.   September 27, 2008

I'm not a novice. I know a lot about routers and how they work. I'm also familiar with their limitations, and I can honestly say that this is the best consumer router I've ever used.

I do a lot of downloading with bittorrent clients and this is the first router I've used that allows me to download wirelessly without killing the wifi connection to the other computers in the house, as well as my own ability to browse. Seriously - I've got Azureus crankin' at full speed and I can still enjoy Youtube. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, trust me - that's good. If you do know what I'm talking about, then you know that this is a remarkable product.

People are complaining about compatibility with PC's/Windows, saying that they just can't connect at all. I'd bet money on the fact that this is because they have the Airport set to use WPA2 only, and their PC is probably only set up to use WPA1 - whether it be the Windows wireless settings or the driver/settings for their wireless adapter itself. This can be solved by either updating Windows and/or your wireless driver and settings, or by simply configuring the airport to use both WPA1 and WPA2 (it's a choice in a dropdown menu in the Airport utility). I run Windows via Boot Camp on my MacBook and WPA2 wouldn't work (in Windows) until I upgraded to SP3.

Oh yeah - and the shared printer set-up? Simple and Fast. Awesome.

I feel like a fool for putting off buying the Extreme. Like everyone else, for years I was reluctant to drop this much money on a router. After using it for several months now, I can honestly say it was money well-spent. Highly recommended.

AirPort is easy to set up   September 26, 2008

This device makes going wireless very easy. Just follow the instructions and you are online. We have an iMac and several Windows-based PCs and were a little concerned whether they would all work. No problem.

Apple Wireless   September 9, 2008

This was one the easiest installs that I have had in regards to wireless devices. For someone not familiar with mac, this could prove to be tricky, so some research would be helpful. Ever since I installed it, I haven't had any issues with the it. My old wireless, I had to constantly reset and turn on and off for a variety of reasons. This has been very rock solid.

Works like a man-a-war: Jerky, but strong.   September 6, 2008

The airport is fantastic. It stops working about once a day for a couple of hours, and I have to completely reconfigure it once a week, but we can't really blame it, because the amp and lights go out around the same time. Could an electrician journeyman have been included in the package? Possibly. Was he? No. So four stars for taking a long time to restart after the electricity shorts out. Other than that, it's perfect. Shipping was quick and fabulous, although in the future, there should be small holes in the box. So the electrician can breathe.
