Wide Color Enhancer/Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp

The NTSC (National Television Systems Committee) has established the color standards all TVs in America try to meet. And typical LCD TVs only meet about 72% of this standard. Samsung LCD HDTVs use Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp back lights to give you 92% coverage of the NTSC standard, ensuring truer, more breathlessly vivid colors.

Samsung’s exclusive Wide Color Enhancer technology delivers more brilliant colors, even in bright areas of the picture where blues and greens are washed out on conventional screens. The system displays wider color reproduction, showing you truer colors – the fresh green of spring foliage, the intense blue of the summer sky.

Audio Features

TruSurround is a patented SRS technology that solves the problem of playing 5.1 multichannel content over two speakers. TruSurround delivers a compelling, virtual surround sound experience through any two-speaker playback system, including internal television speakers and headphones. It is fully compatible with all multichannel formats up to 5.1 channels. High-quality virtual surround sound can be experienced with just the two hidden, downward-firing side-mounted 2.2-channel dome speakers built into the TV.

SRS TruSurround XT technology delivers an amazing, simulated 3D effect with clear dialog and powerful bass.

TruSurround XT audio also adds three audio enhancement technologies to produce an amazingly immersive sound experience.
  • Dialog Clarity brings movie dialog into Focus during the playback of any surround-encoded material to make speech much clearer and crisper.
  • TruBass creates incredible deep rich bass allowing a person to perceive significantly deeper, richer low bass tones that are far beyond the physical low frequency capabilities of the speaker itself.
  • The SRS WOW feature widens the sound stage by processing standard two-channel stereo material as well as multi-channel encoded material for a dramatic improvement in the playback of any stereo audio over a two-speaker system.
Stereo broadcast reception is offered for MTS and SAP with 181-channel capacity. A sound leveler keeps audio volume consistent during channel changing.

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

HDTV Size chart
With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.
If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.
  • Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
  • Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5
  • Series 5 1080p LCD HDTVs are available in 32-inch, 37-inch, 40-inch, 46-inch, and 52-inch models
  • Series 6 1080p LCD HDTVs are available in 19-inch, 22-inch, 32-inch, 40-inch, 46-inch, and 52-inch models
  • Series 7 1080p LCD HDTVs are available in 40-inch, 46-inch, and 52-inch models

Very happy   January 31, 2009
JP (California, USA)
This TV is great. The picture is amazing. Some people complained about the sound, but is sounds great to me. If you are upgrading from an old, small TV, you will be very happy with the picture and sound of this unit. The menu is easy to navigate and contains many image adjustment options. The swivel base is nice for when you want to see the TV from a different part of the room.

Also, this unit meets 2009 Energy Star requirements and uses around .25 watts of electricity in standby mode. Just make sure you lower to backlight to a reasonable level, as all LCD TVs have their backlights cranked up to standout at the store.

I am usually a very critical reviewer, but I have no complaints about this TV.

Excellent picture quality at a great price! Standard definition programs looks good, but high definition and full 1080p blu-rays are outstanding. I highly recommend this television to anyone looking to upgrade their living room or bedroom TV.

No PIP   January 28, 2009

I purchased this TV because of the advertised PIP feature. To my disappointment the PIP is only for 'analog broadcasts only' and 'one external video source'! But analog broadcasts will be obsolete and I'm still not able to get PIP to work with an external video source! Felt like being misled by Samsung!

Very, very nice.   January 24, 2009

outstanding television! very bright, very vibrant, tons of inputs. i have one teeny tiny gripe: the picture-in-picture versatility is not quite up to par with the rest of the tv's features. i hardly ever use PIP, so i didn't let it effect my overall opinion.

i turn off all the extra jazz that all these manufacturers try to modify the signal with; i just like to view the signal, pure and simple. there's no input lag for playing games, it's perfect for that. blu-rays look amazing as expected, and this tv does support 1080p24, along with several pc display resolutions, including of course, 1920x1080@60hz.

just a great buy. i'll have this tv for years and years.

A better value than the LN32A650. Love it!   January 24, 2009

I own both the LN32A550 and the LN32A650. One I use for TV only, and the other I use additionally as a computer monitor. I purchased the LN32A650 about 7 months ago and, now that I own the LN32A550, I wish I had purchased it back then instead. I would have not only saved some money, but I would have been happier with the product.

I prefer the matte screen on the LN32A550, as well as the black surround. The "Touch of Color" TV is nice and there isn't a thing wrong with it, but it doesn't look nearly as classy as this model does. The red surround is going to look pretty dated soon. And the glare off of the shiny LCD is a little annoying. Also, don't go for the hype about the whole InfoLink-ethernet connection on the LN32A650. It's pretty lame. The only thing that is better about the A650 is the remote. But since I have to use the cable remote anyway, that's not exactly a huge selling point.

It's true that the sound isn't fantastic on either model. It's not horrible by any means. Just don't go expecting some sort of theater-like experience. If sound is a big deal to you, the Sony Bravia XBR series is really nice and sounds much better(for a small TV). The Sony was too pricy for my needs, though. $300 difference in price is a lot of cash! And I didn't find that the Sony display was any better than this one.

Before I bought this television, I purchased the LN32A450 in an effort to save a few dollars. I ended up returning it for this model. Anyone that tells you that you can't tell the difference between 1080p and 720p in an LCD monitor of this size is wrong. Maybe it doesn't matter for standard def programs, but if you are going to use your television as a computer monitor, you'll want 1080p. The resolution difference is striking. You have a lot more control over the size of the display resolution, which then gives you more control over the size of the icons and the words. I'm not a gamer, so I'm not thinking in terms of games and high end video graphics. I'm more concerned about opening documents and reading email with as much clarity as possible and the 1080p capability really helps a lot with even these basic things.
I'm very happy with this television.
