Entertaining the Kids
Now is as good of a time as any to start preparing for the road trip. Your children are sure to be restless with all of the hustle and bustle, so being well prepared ahead of time will go the distance in maintaining your sanity out on the road.
- Games
- I Spy: One child spies objects and describes their color, shape or any variable you can come up with and the other children guess.
- Hangman: Add phrases and categories to make the rounds last longer.
- Pictionary: All you need for this one is a pad of paper and writing utensil. It allows your children to be creative and draw just about anything they come up with. You can also split the rounds into categories to create an additional challenge.
- Car Bingo: Make laminated cards with pictures of different things you will encounter on the road and give the kids washable markers to mark out what they see.
- Doodle Time
- Have plenty of paper, crayons, pens, pencils and washable markers. And something hard like a clip board or book for them to use as a hard surface.
- Reading Time
- Books on tape are great for children who may become car sick when reading for extended periods of time.
- Buy them plenty of their favorite books to read along the way.
- Creative Story
- Tell a vivid story incorporating your surroundings, familiar characters and maybe even stops along the way. Better yet, allow your children to be storytellers as well by adding their own variations, taking turns adding to the story until you have a fun conglomerate of everyone´s imaginations.
- Game or Movie Time
- If your car ride is a really long one, it is probably worth purchasing a portable DVD player or game system for when these other items above simply don't cut it. Make sure to include your children's favorite games and/or movies to keep them occupied (and also a way for them to watch/play them).
