- Have a plan—Work out and rehearse a plan with your family as communication may be interrupted during and after the storm.
- Be ready to be without power for days—Make sure you have batteries for your flashlight and radios, and if you have a generator, check that it is working and you have fuel.
- Have water—As it is likely that water service will be interrupted, stock up on drinking water and fill your bathtubs to use for other water needs.
- Keep your gas on—Unless your natural gas provider instructs you to, do not turn off your gas at the meter as leaving the gas on will help keep water from entering your gas pipes in the event of flooding. If you wish to turn off your gas, do so to each of the appliances that uses gas.
- Prepare your trees—Cut any dead trees or stray limbs on your property that could strike your home or power lines. Also, pruning your trees will help them weather the storm without being uprooted by high winds.
- Save your food—Turn your refrigerator and freezer to their lowest settings to keep food fresh longer if you lose power.
- Fill your prescriptions—Make sure you have an adequate supply of any medicines your family might need.
- Protect your electronics—Unplug any non-essential appliances and electronic devices to shield them from potential power surges.
- Have food—Stock up on canned food and make sure you have a way to cook it that doesn’t require power or natural gas.
- Be prepared for gas leaks—Know beforehand what to do if you smell gas.
- Know your way out—Check with your local government to familiarize yourself with the evacuation routes in your area.
