Moving 101: Moving to college

When you start college, the last thing you want to be worrying about moving. If you plan well and only take what you need, you will be done with your unpacking quickly. The summer before college starts, you should start planning exactly what you should take with you when you move. I found an article that was written with a college student in mind, College Life: Student Tips and Tricks for an Organized Move, to help you plan your move easily.

I am going to be moving into a dorm in California from Kentucky, and I am very scared. Honestly I have never lived outside my cozy little town, and I know LA is going to be a whole nother world. Because I am moving so far away from home, I am trying to take as much as I can without over doing it, and that is turning out to be kinda expensive. I found this usedcardboardboxes.com place, and I was able to get a dorm kit that was perfect, and it saved me a ton of moving. But now what? Would it be better to send my stuff on ahead or to drive a truck? I'm really confused, and I don't want to ask my parents for help cause they will think I am not ready to move. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Sunshine L.

Thanks for the question! I would suggest looking through the WhiteFence move center, which can be found here:

The Moving Checklist in particular will have some helpful tips and things that we don't always consider when it's time to move.

It mainly comes down to what you're comfortable with and what your spending options are. You should definitely look up the costs of shipping and renting a truck and then compare the two. If you don't have anyone to drive out with you, then it would probably be better to just ship your stuff on ahead and then fly out there.

Also, driving yourself means negotiating a brand new place with a large vehicle or trailer, and you should only do that if you feel comfortable doing so.
