The term netbook refers to any small, lightweight laptop computer designed mainly for accessing the Internet. Netbooks typically only weigh a couple of pounds and have smaller screens than laptop computers. They don't have optical drives, but they do have USB ports that you can use to transfer data. Verizon Wireless is one of several mobile service providers that offer netbooks. Although Verizon netbooks are smaller and less powerful than full laptops, they have advantages including a lower price and more battery life.
Portability
Although all laptops are designed to be portable, netbooks are even lighter and smaller, making it even easier for you to bring them everywhere. Verizon's netbook offers a 10.1-inch display in a computer that's approximately the same height and width as a piece of paper. At just under 3 lbs., it's easily stashed in briefcases, purses or backpacks for wireless connectivity on the go.
Accessibility
Verizon netbooks allow you to connect to the Internet from virtually anywhere in the wireless provider's coverage area. While this can also be done on smartphones, Verizon netbooks offer a larger viewing area as well as additional functionality on the Web. For example, iPhones and some older Android smartphones can't view Adobe Flash content on websites. Verizon netbooks are fully capable of supporting Flash as well as many other types of enhanced Web content.
Price
Depending on the screen size, processor speed and bells and whistles, laptops can easily cost $700 to $3,000. Because they're less powerful and smaller, Verizon netbooks cost less than laptops. Verizon's netbook retails for about $500, but if you sign a two-year contract with Verizon and order on the Internet, you qualify for rebates that bring the cost of the netbook down to $40.
Battery
The usage time on any rechargeable battery is quite variable and depends on how much processing is being done, the age of the battery and the type of device being powered. Many of the major laptop companies advertiser average battery life times of between three and five hours. The Verizon HP netbook advertises a battery life of up to nine and a half hours as of 2011, which is quite a bit higher than average laptop batteries.
Additional Features
While the main purpose of a netbook is to access the Internet, the computer is capable of much more. You can install and use word processing and spreadsheet programs. This makes a netbook a tool for note taking in meetings or classes. Music, movies and pictures can be downloaded and edited using a netbook. Netbooks also offer users a full, if somewhat scaled down, tactile keyboard, which touch-screen devices don't.
