How to Boost Speed for Dial-Up Internet

Step 1

Go to the COM port settings for your computer. These settings are within the Control Panel, under Hardware then Device Manager. If your computer has more than one COM port, determine which one the modem is installed in.

Write down the existing settings for your modem. To speed up your connection you're going to change several of these hardware settings. If your Internet stops working or slows down, you'll want to return the settings to their original values.

Step 3

Increase the bits per second setting. The default value for this setting is 9,600 bps even though 56K modems are optimized for a higher speed. Change this value to 115,200 Kbps or higher. If you set it to a higher value and experience any difficulties, change it to 115,200.

Step 4

Adjust your receive and transmit buffers. This is located under the Advanced tab. Typically the transmit slider bar is as far right as it will go, which means it will transmit at the maximum speed. The receive bar is usually not as far right. Slide it to the right to receive at the maximum speed.

Step 5

Update your modem settings. Click on Modems in the Control Panel, then click on Properties. Under General Properties, set the maximum speed to 115,200 Kbps, but be sure the Only Connect at This Speed box is unchecked. Under the Connection tab click on Port Settings and slide the Receive Buffer slider to the right.

Step 6

Reboot your computer. You will need to reboot to make all of your changes take effect. Once the computer is restarted, connect to the Internet and test out the speed of your modem. If your connection is faster, you've succeeded. If it seems slower, reset the settings and test them out one at a time.

Step 7

Install modem speeding software. This software works with your browser's cache to limit the amount of information that is downloaded on subsequent visits to the same sites. There are many different programs from which to choose. Read online reviews to determine which one will give you the best results. As of the time of publication, these services typically cost between $5 and $10 per month on top of your dial-up cost.
