AT&T;'s home fiber-optic network service is called U-verse. Users can build their own subscription plans, which may include any combination of digital television, high-speed Internet and home phone services. While many users choose to subscribe to multiple services, thereby receiving discounted rates, AT&T; does allow users to subscribe to Internet service individually.

U-verse

AT&T;'s U-verse is a fiber-optic network service that provides broadband Internet to users. U-verse transmits data from the service provider to user's computers in the form of light. The data travels at light-speed through wires made of slim glass filaments, which must be specially installed in a user's home or office. U-verse Internet includes a wireless router for home networking, so users can connect to the Internet anywhere in their homes without plugging their computers into anything.

Plans

AT&T; U-verse subscribers can choose between five broadband Internet plans. The most basic plan offers download speeds of 3 Mbps, which allows high-speed access to email, social networking sites, mp3 downloads and photo sharing. The fastest plan offers a 24 Mbps download speed, which allows high-speed access to games, conferences, movie downloads, file uploads and streaming video. The other three plans offer speeds which allow some but not all of these activities. No U-verse subscription requires a contract.

Extras

Subscription to U-verse includes access to AT&T;'s national wireless network, so users can connect to the Internet wirelessly at AT&T; hotspots including airports, Starbucks locations and Barnes and Noble bookstores. It also includes AT&T; Mail Plus, which provides users up to 10 email accounts with extensive email storage capacity. Security features include pop-up blockers, spam blockers and anti-virus software. U-verse allows users to establish disposable email addresses for one-time transactions on the web and parental controls to restrict children's Internet access.

Other Services

While users can choose to order Internet service from AT&T; on its own, they can also bundle their Internet subscription with digital television or phone subscriptions. U-verse television includes access to 155 high-definition channels and use of Total Home DVR, a service which allows users to record a program in one room and then watch it in another. U-verse Voice, the home phone service, includes caller ID, three-way calling capacity and call waiting, among other features.
