How to Compare DSL Internet Providers

Step 1

Make a list of what your Internet needs are. List the type of activities you plan to do with your Internet connection. Different uses demand different download speeds.

Step 2

List features that DSL Internet providers in your area offer. These can include download speed, security suites, email accounts, web space, modem equipment, 24/7 live customer service support, discounted service and bundles with phone and television services. You may also wish to include such factors as the provider's reputation, history and reliability.

Step 3

Rank the importance of each trait to you with five being the most important, four being important, three being neutral, two being not particularly important and one being not at all important or not desired at all.

Step 4

Make a list of the DSL Internet service providers in your area. Most DSL providers will ask you to enter an address or a phone number on their website. Once you do so, the site will tell you whether the provider offers service to your number. Discard the ones that don't offer service in your area.

Step 5

Research each provider and determine what the download speeds are, the cost of each package or bundle, whether a contract is required and how long the contract extends, what type of software is provided, what equipment is included and whether Web space and email are provided.

Step 6

Rank each factor and compare it with the list you made before you began your research. Determine which DSL provider most closely matches with what you want and need.
