How to Connect a DVD Recorder to a DVR

by Maya Austen, Demand Media

One of the simplest ways to offload videos saved to a DVR is to hook up a DVD recorder to the DVR, then use the DVD recorder to dub videos from the DVR to a DVD disc. Because DVRs have a limited storage capacity, eventually you will have to erase some of your DVR recordings to make space for new ones. By transferring your DVR recordings to DVD discs you get to permanently save these digital quality recordings.

Cable Connections

Step 1

Leave in place the coaxial cable, coming from the cable wall outlet, connected to the DVR's RF-In terminal, and a coaxial cable, HDMI cable or component video cables connecting the DVR to directly to the TV set. The coaxial cable connected to the RF-In terminal carries the main TV signal from your cable or satellite provider.

Step 2

Plug the end of an A/V cable with the red plugs into the DVR's red A/V output jack labeled "Audio R." Plug the other end of the cable into the DVD recorder's red A/V input jack.

Step 3

Insert one end of an A/V cable with the white plugs into the DVR's white AV output jack labeled "Audio L." Plug the other end of the cable into the DVD recorder's white A/V input jack.

Step 4

Connect one end of another A/V cable with the yellow plug to the DVR's yellow A/V output jack labeled "Video." Connect the other end of this cable to the DVD recorder's yellow A/V input jack.

Step 5

Using the second set of AV cables, plug one end of the A/V cable with red plug into the DVD recorder's red A/V output jack. Plug one end of the A/V cable with white plugs into the DVD recorder's white A/V output jack. Plug one end of the A/V cable with yellow plugs into the DVD recorder's yellow A/V output jack. Connect the other end of each cable to the matching colored A/V input jack on the television.

Tips & Warnings

  • Repeatedly press "Input" on the TV remote control until the TV's video input channel is set to the proper AV source. Use the "Input" button on the DVD record remote control to set its video input to AV as well. If everything is hooked up properly you should see on the TV the content that is playing on the DVR when all of the devices are turned on. In addition, when a DVD disc that already has data on it is loaded into the DVD recorder the DVD recorder's menu should appear.
  • If the program you are attempting to dub to from the DVR to DVD disc is copy protected, the DVD recorder will show an error message indicating that the video you are trying to copy cannot be transferred.
