NetZero built a reputation for offering low-cost dial-up service in the early days of the World Wide Web. The company now also sells broadband Internet access. NetZero sends its new Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) customers a broadband installation kit. The kit includes a modem, the cables required for hookup, an installation CD and phone filters, which are used to filter out the broadband and voice frequencies on the phone line. Connecting NetZero's DSL Internet involves following the straightforward directions to install these parts.
Step 1
Verify that the NetZero DSL service is switched on by checking for a confirmation email. NetZero confirms every order by email rather than by letter or a phone call, so you must provide an email address and be able to retrieve NetZero's message. You could use a friend or family member's email address until your NetZero account is set up. When you receive the confirmation email, insert the NetZero installation CD into your computer's optical drive. The software will launch and install the NetZero DSL Connection Center software.
Step 2
Plug the dual-connection filter into the wall jack and follow the on-screen directions. The filter includes both a "Phone" and "DSL" port, and the two ports are labeled accordingly. Plug any telephone into the "Phone" port and plug the DSL modem into the "DSL" port. Install filters on all phone jacks in your home that you plan to use for your phone.
Step 3
Connect the modem to your computer using the yellow Ethernet cable supplied with the modem. Next, connect the power supply to the modem. Check that the "Power" and "Ethernet" lights on the front of the modem are illuminated green.
Step 4
Open a Web browser and try navigating to a Web page after about one minute. Verify that the "Internet" or "Service" lights are illuminated and navigate to a website that you know is likely to respond, such as a major search engine.
