DVRs are very useful for recording and playing back shows on your home television. They are also relatively easy to use since they include a guide for programming recordings. One of the disadvantages of a DVR, however, is that it only has a certain amount of disk space, so old shows must be deleted to make room for new ones. With the help of a video capture device, you can record your shows to your PC and its larger hard drive.
Step 1
Install a video capture device on your PC. Some devices must be installed internally while others connect with a USB cable. Read the manual for specific instructions.
Step 2
Insert the disc to install any necessary drivers and the video capture software. This software will record the video stream coming into the capture device.
Step 3
Plug the video and audio cables into the output jacks of the DVR, then plug the other end of the cables into the input jacks of the video capture device.
Step 4
Open the video capture software by clicking its icon on the desktop or in the "Programs" section of the Start menu. The software will show a preview window of the video stream.
Step 5
Use the DVR remote to navigate to your recorded show and begin playback.
Step 6
Press the "Record" button in the capture software to begin recording the video stream.
Step 7
Press "Stop" in the capture software when the show has finished and stop playback on the DVR if necessary.
Step 8
Save your recorded file to a location on your computer's hard drive.
Tips & Warnings
- Some video capture software allows you to edit the recorded video to remove commercials or trim the start and end points. Consult the manual for instructions.
