Cox DVR Problems

by Eoghan McCloskey, Demand Media

A DVR is a popular feature that many homeowners choose to add to their digital cable service offered by companies such as Cox Communications. By digitally recording programs and allowing you to save them to an internal hard drive, DVRs save busy viewers from having to set time aside to watch their favorite programs at their regularly scheduled air times. If you opt to use a DVR at home, it is wise to learn how to troubleshoot all the most common problems you may encounter when using it.

No DVR Functions Working

If none of the DVR functions at all are working, there is a chance that you may not have subscribed to DVR services. Even if you already have a DVR cable box, you will also need to pay for DVR services before you will be able to record any programs. If you verify that you are paying Cox for DVR services, restoring DVR functions may require that you reboot your DVR receiver or have Cox replace it with another DVR box.

Audio or Picture Quality Problems

If you see picture or audio quality problems when playing your DVR recordings back, it can sometimes be difficult to discern whether the DVR is the problem or if the channel that you recorded was experiencing its own picture and audio problems. One easy way to tell is to record programs on many different channels at many different times, simply for testing purposes. If every recording you play back has picture and audio problems, the chances are good that the DVR is at fault and will need to be replaced, particularly if you do not notice any picture or audio problems when watching live TV.

Recordings Not Saving

A common problem experienced by DVR users is the inability to save anything that you record. Very often this issue is caused by the DVR's hard drive filling up. In this case, you can either attempt to move some recordings off the Cox DVR onto a detachable hard drive or to delete recordings from your Cox DVR's hard drive. If your Cox DVR's hard drive is not full yet you are still unable to save any recordings, the drive may have been corrupted and you will need to contact Cox about replacing the DVR.

Other Problems

These problems are no more common when using a Cox DVR than any other company's DVR. These are the most typical problems viewers encounter when using any DVR, but of course there is an almost limitless number of problems that any DVR can encounter. If you are uncomfortable troubleshooting on your own, you can always contact Cox technical support and have them troubleshoot the DVR's malfunctions for you.
