How Do I Download from a Dish DVR?

by Alice Godfrey, Demand Media

Dish Network satellite receivers that have a hard drive in them can function as digital video recorders (DVR). You can transfer, or download, a recording that has been made on the hard drive of a Dish Network DVR onto a different recording media, for example, a videocassette tape. You will need a videocassette recorder (VCR) connected to the outputs on the back of the DVR. You also will need audio and video cables that can be acquired from an electronics store or hobby shop.

Step 1

Place the videocassette recorder (VCR) next to the Dish Network DVR and plug its power cord into an outlet. Rotate the VCR so that you can see its back.

Step 2

Turn the Dish Network DVR off, if it is on, using the included remote's "Power" button. Rotate the DVR so that you can see its back. Insert an end of a video cable into the video output on the DVR that is colored yellow. Insert the other end of the video cable into the video input on the VCR that is colored yellow.

Step 3

Insert the red and white colored plugs at one end of an audio cable into the corresponding red and white colored audio outputs on the back of the DVR.

Step 4

Insert the red and white colored plugs at the other end of the audio cable into the corresponding red and white colored audio inputs on the VCR.

Step 5

Turn on the VCR using its remote control and press "Menu." Select the "Video input" menu, then select the "Video/Composite" input from the choices presented on the screen. Press "Menu" to exit the settings and insert a videocassette tape into the front-loading slot of the VCR.

Step 6

Turn on the TV. Turn on the Dish Network DVR by pressing "Sel" on its remote, and press the "DVR" button. Select a recording to play from the list of choices on the screen, using the direction keys. Press the "Sel" button to bring up a menu. Select "Play" from the pop-up menu and press "Sel."

Step 7

Press the "Record" button on the VCR remote to begin recording the video being played on the Dish Network DVR. Press "Stop" on the remote when the recording is done. Disconnect the cables between the Dish Network DVR and the VCR. Eject the cassette tape by pressing the "Eject" button on the remote or on the front panel.
