DVR boxes allow users to record digital programming and store it to watch later. Many DVR models offer additional bells and whistles that make recording and watching your favorite shows even more enjoyable. If you're interested in getting a DVR, you'll need to keep in mind that DVR systems are proprietary, meaning you can't use a DVR from Comcast if you have cable service through Verizon. Most service providers offer DVR service at no additional cost, however, you will need to purchase or lease a DVR box.
Satellite
DISH Network offers a high-definition DVR system that can record up to three programs at once and offers dual output so users can connect two televisions to the same DVR. The DVR system offered by DISH Network features a one-terabyte internal hard drive, which is the largest of any DVR system. DirecTV offers two DVR models, one high-definition and the other standard-definition. Their HD DVR allows users to lease one DVR box and play back recorded programs on any television with a receiver box attached.
Cable
Each cable company offers their own proprietary DVR box, so you'll have to exchange your box if you move to a new location with a different cable service. Comcast, a popular cable provider, offers an HD DVR as well as a standard DVR. The HD DVR offers a larger capacity so you can store more programming before running out of room. The HD DVR also serves as your HD receiver and DVR all in one, so you'll be able to access HD programming directly through the DVR. Both of Comcast's DVRs offer users the ability to record one program while they are watching another live program. Users can also record two programs if they are watching a recorded program or not watching the television at all.
Fiber-Optic
Fiber-optic television programming is a newcomer to the industry, but it is capturing its fair share of the market with amazing packages and affordable prices. Verizon is one of the larger fiber-optic providers offering Internet, television and telephone services all from one service provider. Verizon also offers a multi-room DVR that allows users to watch a recorded program from any television that has a receiver attached to it. Users can set the DVR to record over the Internet or from a mobile phone with Internet access.
Antenna
If you're using an antenna to receive your television signal, you, too, can hook a DVR up and watch programming whenever you want. The Channel Master DVR is a model that is compatible with the antenna signal and allows users to store 30 hours of HD programming or 130 hours of regular programming. This DVR features many of the same great features offered by other DVR companies, including pausing, commercial skip and slow motion.
