If you have a wireless Internet connection, this allows you a lot of freedom within the bounds of the signal. Installing a wireless signal point only requires a few extra steps and supplies than if you set up a cabled connection. The box containing the wireless router also contains the instructions and necessary cable to connect the two pieces of equipment and achieve wireless access. Every router and modem connects in the same way, regardless of brand.
Step 1
Plug the DSL modem into an electrical outlet for power. Plug the Ethernet cable into the phone jack that receives Internet service. Connect it to the computer with the appropriate cable. All necessary cables will come with the modem in its box.
Step 2
Turn the computer on. Make sure that the computer and modem are functional, and that you receive an Internet signal from your service provider.
Step 3
Unplug the modem to turn it off. Unplug the cable that connects the modem and computer. Remove it from the computer end, but leave it plugged in to the modem.
Step 4
Place the plug into the back of the wireless router to connect the DSL modem and router. Plug the wireless router into an electrical outlet to turn it on. Plug the modem back into the outlet to turn it back on. Give both pieces of equipment two minutes to receive power and perform the necessary connections.
Step 5
Connect the wireless router temporarily to your computer with one of the network cables that came with the router. Follow the manufacturer instructions for configuring the router. You will go to a specified Web page. Follow onscreen prompts to enter identifying information for the equipment to establish service. The router manufacturer provides all of the information you need, printed on paper inserts in the router box. You do not need to know any additional information or programming protocols.
Step 6
Enter a name and password for your network. You can select any name and password, provided they meet the minimum character requirements. Anyone within one or two hundred yards will be able to pick up your signal, but will need the password to access it. Select a secure password that is difficult for others to guess, to keep your connection private.
Step 7
Remove the cable between the computer and router once you have created the network. You should be able to access the Internet through the wireless router.
