A digital video recorder makes digital copies of television shows onto its hard drive. You can then save the program for as long as you wish and watch it when it's convenient for you. Comcast rents DVRs to its customers for a monthly fee. It receives your TV signal and can record both regular and high-definition programs. You don't need a technician to come to your home to install the DVR; you can do it yourself in a matter of minutes.
Step 1
Screw the coaxial cable from your wall into the "Cable In" port on the back of your Comcast DVR.
Step 2
Plug the appropriate end of the power cord into the back of the DVR and the other end into a power outlet or power strip. A power cord should come with the Comcast DVR.
Step 3
Plug the yellow, red and white audio and video cables into the appropriate ports on the back of the DVR and the back of your TV -- this is for older devices. For newer HDTVs, plug an HDMI cable into the appropriate ports on both. These cables can be purchased from any electronics store.
Step 4
Call Comcast's toll-free hotline at 800-266-2278 and follow the prompts to speak with a customer service representative. Inform the representative you just hooked up your DVR. She will send a signal to the device to confirm it was installed correctly. Follow any final instructions you may receive.
