How to Lower a DirecTV Bill

by Sarah Snow, Demand Media

Trimming household expenses is sometimes a necessary step during difficult financial times. Cutting excess fees and luxury services, like satellite TV subscriptions, might solve some financial discrepancies in your budget. If you find that your DirecTV bill has become too expensive, you don't have to end your service altogether. DirecTV customer service can help you customize your service to fit your budget while still providing you with most of the entertainment and news that you currently enjoy.

Step 1

Call DirecTV customer service at 1-800-531-5000.

Step 2

Enter the phone number associated with your DirecTV account and request the option to speak to a customer service representative.

Step 3

Provide the customer service representative with identifying information for your account, such as the last four digits of your social security number, the physical address of your DirecTV services and the phone number associated with your account.

Step 4

Discuss the package options available with your DirecTV account. If your services are higher than basic cable, Internet and phone options, the operator can reduce your bill by reducing your service package. You may reduce your package by removing services such as the NFL Sunday Ticket, removing premium channels like HBO and Showtime, or reducing the connection speeds on your Internet connection.

Step 5

Request a reduced rate on your services instead of removing them. Service providers like DirecTV often have loyalty programs. If you have obtained and paid for services for more than a year, you may be entitled to a variety of rewards or incentives programs.

Step 6

Request an equipment upgrade and rate reduction when you move. DirecTV recognizes that moving is expensive and they offer upgrades to equipment or alternative packages to encourage you to retain their services when you change residences. Use your move to reduce the costs of your service plan while increasing the benefits.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always be kind and friendly during service calls and remember that people are more likely to assist a friendly person than a customer who is crabby and difficult.
