How Many TVs Can You Install on Time Warner Cable?

by Rob Kemmett, Demand Media

Time Warner Cable is a telecommunications company that offers cable television service. During installation, a service technician hooks up the necessary cables and set-top boxes to provide you with a television feed. Homes with multiple televisions are accommodated, as Time Warner Cable allows for numerous TVs to be connected. Additional set-top boxes are installed on your own.

How Many TVs?

Time Warner Cable's television services allow customers to connect as many as five televisions to the main cable box upon the original installation for no additional cost. There is no limit to the total number of televisions that can be connected in addition to the original five, but additional set-top boxes must be rented for $7.99 per month, at the time of publication. As more televisions are connected to Time Warner's cable TV service, the quality of the cable signal deterioriates. A Time Warner service technician tests the signal for each television upon insallation and, if needed, installs a power booster to improve the quality of the signal. Basic cable packages do not require separate boxes for each television, only one main set-top box. If your cable package includes premium movie channels, such as HBO or Cinemax, a separate set-top box is required for each television. Each DVR works with up to three televisions. More than one DVR is required if you want DVR service for more than three TVs.

Which Televisions Require a Set-Top Box?

A digital set-top box is the unit that converts the incoming television signal and displays the picture on the TV. There are multiple scenarios in which a set-top box is required in order to receive cable TV services from Time Warner Cable. Televisions that are not cable-ready and televisions connected to a VCR or DVD player that does not tune to all of the channels included with your Time Warner Cable package require a set-top box. You also need a set-top box for each individual television if your cable package includes premium movie channels or On Demand services.

Where to Get Additional Set-Top Boxes

If you desire to have an extra television connected to your Time Warner Cable service after the original installation, you need to purchase additional cable boxes. Cable boxes can be purchased and picked up at any local Time Warner location. Call 1-888-892-2253 or visit Time Warner Cable's website and click on "Contact Us" to find out where there are Time Warner offices in your area.

Installing Additional Set-top Boxes

You can install additional set-top boxes yourself, without the help of a service technician. Additional cables or connectors may need to be purchased before installation. For installation instructions and a list of required cable connectors, see the FAQ section on Time Warner Cable's website (see Resources).
