Qwest Internet Vs. Clearwire Wireless

Qwest offered high-speed broadband Internet throughout the Western United States using DSL technology. In 2011, Qwest completed its merger with CenturyLink, the third largest telecommunications company in the United States. CenturyLink's Internet service is delivered through a nationwide fiber-optic network. To access the service, you must use a CenturyLink modem. According to CenturyLink, the combination of both companies created a high-capacity 190,000 route-mile fiber network. CenturyLink also offers voice communication and television services, which you can bundle with an Internet plan.

Clearwire provides 4G wireless broadband Internet without installation of any equipment. You can access the service by turning on your device and connecting to the Clearwire network with your computer by wire or wireless. As of July 2011, the service is available in several markets nationwide, including portions of the Eastern United States, the Midwest, Texas, California, the Northwest, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas and Nevada. Outside of Clearwire's 4G network, you can continue to access the Internet through a 3G network for free up to 5GB per month.

Internet plans provided by Qwest included up to 11 free email accounts, access to Wi-Fi Internet through AT&T;'s wireless network, a security suite powered by Norton, online data back-up and support services. You could also upgrade services by purchasing additional online storage and enhanced security and support features. With CenturyLink, plans continue to include a security suite, online data storage and technical support, as well access to an online digital music shop. Clearwire plans also include multiple email accounts.

Qwest offered five Internet plans with download speeds of up to 1.5, 7, 12, 20 and 40 Mbps. In a study of connection speeds by PC Magazine in 2010, Qwest ranked 10th out of 14 national Internet Service Providers. The study found that average surfing speeds for Qwest was 683 Kbps. As of July 2011, as part of CenturyLink, you can subscribe to plans with download speeds of up to 768 Kbps, 1.5, 3 or 10 Mbps. Clearwire does not cap download speeds and you can expect upload speeds of up to 1.5Mbps on its 3G and 4G networks. You can also opt to purchase unlimited plans for a mobile device or home Internet, as well as plans with data caps of 200MB per month.
