Sometimes you might want to transfer music that you've recorded on your DIRECTV digital video recorder to a more portable device, like an MP3 player. The best way to do this is to create a music file with a PC. Then convert the file to multiple formats, and transfer it to a music player. Use some of the same jacks that are designed to be used by a video cassette recorder for this. Recording music involves making the connections and then performing the transfer process.
Step 1
Connect an AV composite cable from the color-coded "Output" jacks on the DIRECTV DVR to the "Input" on your computer sound card. Unless you have a specialist sound card on your PC, the audio "Input" jack on the PC will be a 3.5mm jack, so the normal red and white connectors won't work at both ends. Buy a specific AV Composite to 3.5mm plug cable. It will have a set of red and white plugs on one end, and a mini headphone-like plug on the other end. Plug the 3.5mm plug into the "Microphone" input jack on the sound card. That's the pink one.
Step 2
Launch the "Sound Recorder" program on your PC. It's in the "Accessories" and then "Entertainment" area of the "Start" menu. Press the "Record" button in "Sound Recorder" and select the music on the DIRECTV DVR by choosing it from the menu.
Step 3
Press "Stop" in "Sound Recorder" when you've completed the recording transfer. Then save the recording. It will save as a .WAV file which can be played on your computer. Then convert it into other formats with optional software and transfer it to a music player.
