How do I Record Something on the DVR on DirecTV?

by Patrick Nelson, Demand Media

Satellite television provider DirecTV offers digital video recording functionality as part of its service. The recorders allow you to timeshift entire television seasons, or record just one show. The device also allows for rewinding and fast-forwarding through programming you don't want to see. Finding programming to record is accomplished through a search feature, and scheduling a recording can be accomplished on the box, or with cell phones and computers.

Recording With the DVR

Step 1

Click on the "Menu" button on your remote control and choose "Smart Search." The left side of the screen will display a letter-pad you can use to enter search terms, and the right side will display suggested searches, with new programming that DirecTV believes you may like to see.

Step 2

Navigate through the letters on the keypad with the arrow buttons and the "Select" button.

Step 3

Search by title, person, category or channel. The results will appear as you start to enter terms. Set the recording options by following the on-screen "Record" prompts.

Recording Remotely

Step 1

Register your DirecTV account online using the web-based registration form.

Step 2

Download the DirecTV Scheduler application (app) for the mobile device you want to use, or browse to the DirecTV mobile website on the phone. Alternatively, sign in to the online web-based television listings on your computer.

Step 3

Search for the show using the interface you chose in the previous step. Select the show to record it. The schedule will be sent to the DVR.
