Is Verizon Wireless Faster Than Qwest DSL?

by Carla Jean McKinney, Demand Media

Both Verizon and Qwest offer high speed Internet options. Leaders in DSL and wireless connectivity, both Verizon and Qwest provide a variety of plans using both 3G (third generation) and 4G (fourth generation) technology for faster connectivity and download speeds far exceeding that of dial up service. Verizon's wireless plans offer download speeds of up to 12 mbps (megabits per second), while Qwest's Heavy Duty DSL plans provide speeds between 1.5 and 40 mbps.

High Speed Internet Options

Both Verizon and Qwest offer multiple options for high speed connectivity, using high speed residential connections or mobile broadband technology. Wireless service is delivered via 3G networks throughout the United States, with 4G connectivity available in some areas from Verizon. Both providers offer multiple plan choices, depending on price, speed of connectivity and downloads.

Verizon's Wireless Plans

With coverage available in over 30 states, Verizon is a leader in wireless connectivity. Offering wireless home networking, free wireless routers and up to nine email accounts, Verizon's high speed Internet plans begin with basic High Speed Internet, with connectivity at speeds up to 1 mbps for casual Internet users. High Speed Internet Enhanced, with Wi-Fi hotspot access, offers speeds up to 15 mbps for avid Internet users, gamers and professionals.

Qwest's DSL Plans

With wireless home networking and equipment including modems and adapters, Qwest offers two levels of connectivity. The lower-cost Qwest Choice has a maximum connection speed of 1.5 mbps for download and 896 kbps for upload. Qwest's Heavy Duty Internet packages range from the Ultimate, at 1.5 mbps, to Pro, with download speeds of 40 mbps. Plans are priced according to the speed of connectivity offered.

Optimal Versus Actual Connection Speeds

Both Verizon and Qwest note that speeds listed with plan options represent maximum speed with optimal connectivity. Actual download speeds vary depending on local network availability and traffic, and the highest advertised speeds may not be available in some areas. Users are advised to enter a telephone number on the provider's website to check for availability of plans in their area.
