Satellite cable and television service providers are making it easier than ever to watch what you want, when you want and wherever you want to watch it. This includes thousands of television shows and movies. While others are watching television, you can watch TV on your computer. Best of all, you can watch television on your computer free when you have a subscription to companies such as AT&T;, DirecTV and DISH.

AT&T; U-verse Online

Step 1

Set your DVR for "Web Remote Access." (This requires U-verse TV and high-speed Internet service.)

Step 2

Go to the att.net/unverseonline website. Log on with your AT&T; U-verse account, putting in your member ID and password. If you do not have an account, you can start one for free.

Step 3

Use the online interface system to select hit TV shows, classics, movies, trailers and video clips to watch on your computer.

Step 4

Check your local TV listings on the AT&T; website and set reminders for shows you want to watch.

DirecTV; TV2PC

Step 1

Check and confirm that you have a DirecTV Plus HD DVR receiver. If not, contact DirecTV to upgrade your existing model to this model.

Step 2

Download the free DirecTV2PC application. Connect an Ethernet cable from your HD DVR to your wireless router -- however, if you have the whole home service, you will need to get a conversion kit from DirecTV.

Step 3

Turn on your television monitor and use your remote to go to "Parental," "Fav's" & "Setup." Select "System Setup," then "Network Setup," followed by "Connect Now." Allow the connection process to complete, then press "Continue," using your remote control, and "Done" when the process is complete. Allow up to 24 hours for the the DirecTV Cinema titles to populate and appear on your program guide. Once complete, your computer monitor will display the DirecTV interface screen (just like the one on your TV). Move your mouse to select television shows and movies to watch.

Dish Network Online

Step 1

Check to make sure that you have a ViP 922 Sling Loaded DVR or a Sling Adapter with either a ViP 722 or 722K HD Duo DVR capabilities. Use an Ethernet cable to connect one end to an outgoing port on your modem, and the other end to your Dish DVR, if your modem is close to your computer. If not, purchase an adapter from an electronics store or directly from Dish; the adapter should be able to plug into your DVR receiver.

Step 2

Plug the adapter into your modem, and the power line into an open electrical outlet on a wall. This will set up your computer to receive the signal from your receiver -- regardless of where your computer is located.

Step 3

Go to the DishOnline.com website. Log on to your account with your membership ID and password. Set up a new account on the website, if you do not have one.

Step 4

Scroll through offerings of television shows and movies. Select a show or movie to watch from the Dish menu, or shows that you have recorded on your DVR. Watch from your computer, laptop or even on your smart phone.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have an HD DVR and an HD monitor connected to your computer, you can watch shows and movies in high definition.
  • If you have DirecTV Whole-Home DVR service, you cannot use an Ethernet cable to work with your PC. You will need a conversion kit. Contact DirecTV for more information.
