With today’s fancy technology and advanced everything, you are led to believe that cell phone dead zones are a thing of the past. The fact is, the cellular networks have grown considerably. The 3G and 4G speeds have increased as well, but these advancements have come at a bit of a cost. Improvements in the network and speeds have impacted coverage negatively in some areas. The coverage maps provided by the carriers work in theory, but not necessarily in actual practice. With no FCC regulation and no governing body to monitor their advertising regarding coverage, carriers do not feel obligated to inform consumers about dead zones, highly congested areas or places where calls are frequently dropped. Here’s a list of places in Atlanta where you may get no signal, dropped calls or weak coverage depending on your carrier.

  • Welcome All Park – In Fulton county, Welcome All Park is a busy hangout for kids of all ages. There’s lots to do here both inside the multipurpose facility and outside on the park grounds. The park has two lighted tennis courts, a playground, a lighted outdoor basketball court, sheltered picnic grounds with grills, a lighted football and soccer field, five youth baseball fields which are lighted and pedestal grills throughout the park. The multipurpose facility has a fitness center, art room, two indoor swimming pools, gym with attached locker rooms and a game room. What Welcome All Park does not have is good cell phone reception. In some cases, the coverage is just nonexistent. Before dropping your kids off, make a test call to see if you can reach them, or sync your watches and choose a designated meeting place.
  • Westlake High School – Kids shouldn’t use their cell phones during school hours anyway, but for parents who need to get a message through, it can be frustrating for those whose kids attend Westlake. You will need to do it the old fashioned way, the way parents did for decades: call the school and talk with the school secretary, hoping your message gets to your kid. Because of the building materials used, many schools have poor or no cell phone coverage. This really is no surprise, but for parents who need to stay in contact with their kids, you may want to come up with some alternative communication strategies.
  • The Underground Mall – A popular destination for visitors to the Atlanta area is the Underground. Full of cute shops and upscale restaurants, the Underground caters to those who are seeking the unique. However, it doesn’t cater very well to those who like to use their cell phones. If you come with a group and are expecting to keep tabs on everyone by way of cell phone, you may want to rethink that. Finding your friends in a busy mall can be daunting and frustrating when you’re trying to call them and you can’t get service, and it's not an unknown occurrence at the Underground.
  • The Buckhead area – It could be because of the all the buildings or all the trees, but whatever the reason, cell phone usage is an uphill battle in this area. Calls are frequently dropped and reception is sketchy, so don’t expect to call your friends at the mall to meet up at that cute little restaurant on level two. You may get through and then again, you may not. Sync your watches just to be sure.
  • Glenwood Park – This up and coming neighborhood is quaint, and full of fun things to do and see. Unfortunately, using your cell phone here can be a bit of a headache. With all their eco-friendly buildings and unique food establishments, the area has much to offer. But, when you're trying to get things done on your cell phone you might just be in for an unpleasant surprise.
  • Downtown Atlanta – Once again, the buildings could be to blame for the sketchy service in the downtown area. Several carriers have trouble keeping signals going in this beautiful urban setting. Issues range from spotty service to no coverage at all, so it’s best not to depend on being able to get calls through when you're cruising downtown.
  • Atlanta Botanical Gardens area – Such beautiful flora greets you in the gardens, but such frustration you feel with your call doesn't go through! Perhaps it’s interference from the trees, but regardless of the cause, cell phone calls have a tendency to drop in this area. You might not want to try to close that big business deal on your cell phone while you're traipsing through the gardens.
  • Piedmont Dog Park – It’s better to just play with Poochie in the dog park area. She desires your undivided attention anyway. Besides, with all the dropped calls here you may end up throwing your fancy phone like a Frisbee when it proves to be roughly as useful at making calls in Piedmont Dog Park.
  • Spink-Collins Park area – Many cell phone users attribute the bad phone service to the train yard. If you’re on the wrong side of the tracks, you will most likely have issues with signal and dropped calls.

Cell phone signals can drop at any time for a variety of reason,s and with so many in use these days, certain areas just get jammed with calls. Let your carrier know when and where you are having issues with coverage. Most issues can be solved with relative ease by the company, but they need to know where problems exist in order to address them.
