Comcast provides a self-installation kit for free to each new subscriber, or you can pay an additional fee to have a professional install the service for you. The installation of services requires you to physically connect the modem to the cable outlet and to the computer and to install a software program. Cable Internet access takes just a few minutes to install with detailed instructions that outline everything you must do to get online.

Modem

A cable modem transmits and interprets the data over the Comcast network. Comcast Internet services require a compatible modem for a secure, reliable connection, which you can lease from the company for convenience. If you would like to purchase a modem or use a modem you currently own, check the list of compatible modems to be sure that the modem will work with Comcast's services. More than 70 modems are listed on the DOCSIS Device Compatibility and Capability page.

Software

Comcast Internet service requires an initial software installation that sets up the user name and password. The software installation takes less than five minutes in most cases and may require a phone call to customer service to activate your account. You can download the needed software if you have current Internet access that you are changing to Comcast service, or you can obtain the software from the Comcast self-install starter kit that ships with each new order.

Cable Outlet

The cable modem physically connects to a cable jack in the wall, so a working cable outlet near the computer is necessary to set up the service. The outlet must connect to the cable access that enters the exterior of the building. When an outlet is not available or accessible to the computer, Comcast will send a technician to install a cable outlet in the appropriate location for an additional fee.

Computer Requirements

The installation of Comcast Internet service has minimum computer requirements including Windows XP/ 2000 300 MHz or higher, Windows Vista 1.5 GHz or higher, Mac OS 10.4 or higher, or Power PC G3 or higher. The memory requirements are 128 MB to 256 MB depending on the computer's operating system. A minimum hard disk space or 150 MB, a CD-ROM drive and a 10/100 Ethernet port are also required.
