Cable subscribers have many options. One product on the market is Verizon's FiOS, which is a combination of telephone service, high-speed Internet and cable TV. For the individual or family with multiple communications needs, the all-in-one nature of FiOS may be especially appealing.
Fiber Optics
The essence of Verizon FiOS is that it uses high-tech fiber optic networks, as opposed to slower copper lines, to transmit data. Fiber optic networks are also less prone to network failure and easier to monitor than other types of lines. The greater data capacity of fiber optics is what permits a heavy flow of data – such as Internet, high-definition TV -- over the Verizon network.
Cable TV
FiOS TV is a high-definition cable TV package. In addition to a number of HD channels, FiOS TV also includes numerous instant access movie and TV titles. Customizable features let FiOS users program their TVs from the Internet and search TV listings via an on-screen guide. You can also access social networking sites from your television set.
Telephone
The phone service that comes with the FiOS package is Digital Voice. It allows for high-definition-quality phone conversations. It also comes bundled with multiple phone options. In addition to the standard voice mail and caller ID are features such as privacy settings, number blocking and the ability to sync your calendar with your phone.
Internet
FiOS Internet delivers high-speed web surfing, downloading and uploading. It's good for high-data Internet users who enjoy streaming video, playing online games, and downloading and uploading media. The service includes Wi-Fi and an email account. Additionally, Verizon refrains from "throttling," which is limiting a user's broadband speed in response to high data usage.
