A DSL connection is a broadband Internet connection sent to your home via your home's telephone wiring. You can use a DSL connection to browse the Internet on your computer and connect to the Internet on any Internet-capable devices in your home such as your Xbox 360. Sometimes a DSL connection on an Xbox 360 will run slowly, but there are a number of steps you can take to increase your speed should this happen.
Step 1
Shut down any bandwidth hogs on connected computers. Programs such as streaming video or Bittorrent seem to take priority when it comes to DSL bandwidth, and will slow your Xbox 360 connection drastically if they are running at the same time you try to connect to Xbox Live. Terminating downloads and shutting down any programs that demand large amounts of bandwidth will help ensure a fast connection on your Xbox.
Step 2
Turn off all connected computers. Several types of malware or viruses will consume bandwidth on your network, but will do so invisibly so you will not be able to shut them down like you would legitimate programs. Shutting down your computers may not get rid of the viruses or other bandwidth hogs, but it will stop them from sucking up your connection speed.
Step 3
Disconnect any routers and plug your Xbox 360 directly into the DSL modem. Some routers have built-in firewalls that do not play nicely with the Xbox 360's hardware. Connecting the Xbox 360 directly to the DSL modem will ensure you get the highest speeds possible out of your connection.
