The options for cable TV service are numerous, even when considering all that is available from a single provider. If you are a Comcast customer, you have likely heard of DVR, or digital video recorder. DVR allows you to record and store television shows. To find out if DVR is right for you, find out the different capabilities and limitations of the HD DVR and the regular DVR provided by Comcast before making your decision.

What does DVR do?

DVR allows you to record any television show, store it and watch it at a later time. With DVR from Comcast, you are also able to rewind, fast forward and pause recordings. With DVR, you can record a single television show, or you can set the DVR to record an entire series of shows. It is even possible to set the DVR to skip recording reruns of the show and only record new episodes of a show.

How do you get DVR service?

If you are currently a Comcast customer and want to add DVR service, you can call the customer service department to request the service. If you'd prefer to chat with a live representative online, you can do so through Comcast's website, as well. You might also consider swapping out your cable box for one that has a built-in DVR so that you don't have to have an additional box.

How much storage does a DVR have?

Comcast provides two types of DVRs: the HD DVR and the DVR. If you have HDTV, the HD DVR allows you to record programs in HD, and it provides different storage capacity than the regular DVR. The HD DVR has 500 GB of storage, and you can record up to 300 hours of regular programming or up to 60 hours of HD programming. The standard DVR provides 80 GB of storage, which means you can record up to 45 hours of regular programming.

How Long are Recordings Kept?

With the DVR, you are able to keep stored recordings as long as you have the storage space available. If you have conflicting recordings, or you want to make room for one program by deleting another, you can adjust the recordings manually, or you can set your priorities on the DVR so that it will automatically decide which program is the priority to record over another program.
