Houston is big -- Texas big. The Houston area covers over 10,000 square miles with over 5.6 million residents, making it the sixth-largest metropolitan area in the United States. Depending upon the Houston area that you're moving to, you may have up to 26 residential electric companies from which to choose. With so many choices, he situation has the potential to become so complicated that both the government and a consumer group have websites devoted to helping you choose your home's electricity provider.

Different Options

According to the Texas Electric Choice Education Program website, understanding your choices is the first task to undertake. Unlike relocation to smaller cities with a single electrical provider, you have double-digit choices in Houston. Each power company offers different lengths of contract terms -- much like cell phone providers -- that range from month-to-month to up to three years. Each company also provides electricity at different rates: fixed, variable or indexed rates or a combination thereof. Another option is the degree of "green" energy the company provides, based upon an assessment by an outside party. According to the website Houston Electricity Choice, the average Houston residents spends over $2,000 per year on this utility, so it behooves you to carefully consider your options.

Questions to Ask

The Texas Electric Choice Education Program website provides consumers with a list of 10 questions to ask different providers to best understand your options. Among the recommended queries is what your rate will be per hour, the length of your contract period and whether or not this rate is fixed or variable. These questions help you narrow the field of electrical providers to those that will best meet your financial and electrical needs. In addition to the recommended questions, you are also provided a site to investigate the rate of customer complaints formally lodged against each utility company.

Comparing Electrical Plans

You may determine which companies you have to choose from by the Texas Electric Choice Education Program website using its search by zip code option. The returned results gives you the ability to compare different programs available to your residential address and based upon your specific financial needs and electricity usage.
