When you subscribe to a high-speed DSL Internet connection, you will receive a modem that must be connected to your phone line. This connection is what allows the DSL signal to be received by the modem, and transmitted to the devices in your home that need an Internet connection. The DSL modem can be connected to any telephone jack in your home using ordinary telephone wires.
Step 1
Select the telephone jack to which you want to connect your modem. Place the modem near this jack.
Step 2
Unplug any phone line already connected to the phone jack.
Step 3
Plug a DSL filter into the phone jack, if needed. Some DSL modems come with a filter to help eliminate interference between the DSL signal and the telephone signal. If your modem does not have a filter, you can buy one at an electronics store, if desired. A filter has one male plug and two female ports.
Step 4
Plug a telephone wire into the female port of the DSL filter labeled "DSL." Plug the other end of this telephone wire into your DSL modem.
Step 5
Plug a second telephone wire into the female port of the DSL filter labeled "Phone." Plug the other end of this telephone wire into your home phone.
Step 6
Plug the power cord of the DSL modem into an electrical outlet, turn it on and allow it to power up completely. Check your computer for an Internet connection. Check your home phone for a dial tone. If you experience problems, recheck all of your connections.
