Cricket is a telecommunications company that offers mobile broadband services in addition to its traditional wireless phone services. In 2011, the company launched its "Cricket Crosswave" device, which uses a mobile broadband signal to create a mobile hotspot. Hotspots can be used to access the Internet from anywhere a cellular signal is available.

Mobile Broadband

Mobile broadband refers to the streaming Internet service that's now widely available on cellular phone carriers. Most carriers, including Cricket, offer 3G broadband services as the industry standard. This service allows phones and other devices with built-in mobile broadband to access most Internet services, but it restricts large data sharing. For that reason, mobile broadband is usually not a suitable replacement for home broadband services.

Hotspots

Mobile hotspots refers to the use of a mobile broadband device that translates the signal into a standard Wi-Fi signal. This signal can then be used by nearby devices, such as laptops and smartphones. Hotspots allow multiple users to access the service at once, making mobile hotspots a great option for offices, carpools and other situations where more than one person needs to work from a single signal.

Cricket Crosswave

The Cricket Crosswave is a device that receives the company's mobile broadband signal and translates it into a standard Wi-Fi signal. The Crosswave is a dual mode DO/Wi-Fi device that creates a mobile hotspot. These hotspots allow a standard wireless Internet signal for any laptop or other device with a Wi-Fi connection. The Crosswave supports multiple devices at once, and has a built-in memory port for up to 32 gigabytes of information.

Services

Cricket customers who opt for broadband Wi-Fi service must purchase the Cricket Crosswave and then purchase one of three plans to support the device. The basic plan allows up to 2.5 gigabytes of usage per month, while the intermediate plan allows up to 5 gigabytes of usage per month. Cricket's premium plan allows up to 7.5 gigabytes of usage per month.
