What Happens During Comcast Home Phone Install?

by Alexis Rohlin, Demand Media

Comcast home phone lines and Comcast Digital Voice can be installed into your home. Because there has been such growth in the technology that is used on your phone lines, installers may need to replace the old, out-of-date phone lines. Technicians sometimes need to call coworkers on their cell phones to confirm that what they are seeing in your home is what the engineer has listed in his schematics and for additional support when they come across a problem such as old wiring or defective cabling that is not up to the phone industry's safety standards.

Scheduling

Once you order your Comcast home phone, you will have to contact Comcast to set up the installation date and time. With most home installations, you will be given a window of time, such as between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., during which you can expect the technician to show up.

Installer

When the technician comes to install your home phone, he will inspect the wiring inside and outside your home. Depending on the age of your home and the phone wire, it may need to be replaced or updated to work with current phone technology. If you are having a Digital Voice home phone line installed, he may have to replace the phone wall jacks as well. This can involve maneuvering wires or cables under carpeting or drilling small access holes through walls that the cable is run through. You may have to vacuum up the dust or paint debris made when the technician drilled the hole, but the mess left behind will not be excessive.

Installation Time

Installation of Comcast home phone lines can take an hour or more, depending on the condition of the wiring in your home and the connection on the outside of your house, which is called a drop-line. If you ordered a package that includes cable TV and Internet, the installation may take two to four hours. Installation time varies, depending on your home's individual needs and the starting condition of your phone lines.

Fees

Your first Comcast bill will include a one-time installation-service fee if you had a technician install your services. If you don't want to pay the fee, you can order the self-installation kit. You won't have to pay for the kit, but you will have to pay for shipping and handling to get it. These charges will appear on your first bill.
