How to Hook Up AT&T DSL Service

by Si Kingston, Demand Media

Many AT&T; DSL subscribers receive a self-installation kit in the mail. The kit comes complete with installation instructions and various components, such as the Ethernet cables and filter, required to install the modem. The modem can be connected to any phone jack. If the phone jack is currently being used by a telephone line, the included two-way adapter will allow both the phone line and DSL line to occupy the same jack.

Step 1

Insert the included two-way adapter into the phone jack that the DSL line will be connected to.

Step 2

Connect the included Ethernet filter to one of the jacks on the two-way adapter.

Step 3

Plug the telephone line into the Ethernet filter, if necessary.

Step 4

Insert the Ethernet cable into the free jack on the two-way adapter. Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into the AT&T; DSL modem.

Step 5

Plug the power cord into the DSL modem. Plug the other end of the power cord into the power outlet.

Step 6

Insert the included installation CD into your computer's optical drive. Select the modem when prompted by the installation software. Click "Next." Accept the user agreement. Enter your name and phone number into the corresponding fields, then click "Next." The software will install and the computer will restart.

Step 7

Connect a second Ethernet cable to the corresponding port on the modem when prompted by the DSL Modem Setup screen. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the computer's Ethernet port.

Step 8

Turn the DSL modem power switch to "On." The Power, Link and Ready LED lights will turn solid green within two minutes.

Step 9

Click "Next" on the DSL Modem Setup screen. Click "Next" again and the installation software will display a confirmation that the DSL modem is properly installed. Click "Finished."
