A crossover cable is a special type of Ethernet cable designed to connect one computer to another computer rather than the Internet. A crossover cable has a bridged connection in the center of the cable, which allows both computers to access one another without burning out the Ethernet ports on either computer. It is a simple matter to install a crossover cable into two computers.
Step 1
Examine the back plate of thee computer and locate the Ethernet port. It resembles an overly wide telephone jack.
Step 2
Plug one end of the crossover cable into the computer Ethernet port.
Step 3
Locate the Ethernet port on the other computer.
Step 4
Connect the other end of the crossover cable to the Ethernet port on the second computer.
Step 5
Turn on one of the computers, which will serve as the "Host" computer, and open the "Control Panel."
Step 6
Open the "Network and Sharing Center" icon, then click the "Network Sharing" option.
Step 7
Double-click the "Unidentified Network" option at the top of the window, then click the "Network Discovery and File Sharing Are Turned Off" information bar. Click the "Turn On Network Discovery..." button to activate the crossover cables and create a new network between the two computers.
