Customers looking to switch from dial-up to high-speed Internet service can feel overwhelmed or intimidated by the technical terms and the logistics of the switch. But NetZero, like many companies, provides the necessary equipment and explanations to make the switch painless even if you don't consider yourself computer-savvy.
NetZero DSL
NetZero's high-speed Internet service, also called broadband Internet, is provided via DSL. DSL digital Internet service where the data is delivered over traditional copper telephone lines. NetZero also offers dial-up and accelerated dial-up Internet service. These services offer slower connections via a traditional modem, which ties up the phone line while the Internet is in use, whereas DSL doesn't.
Broadband Installation Kit
Customers who purchase NetZero's DSL Internet service receive not just a modem but a broadband installation kit. The kit includes installation instructions, the company's DSL modem, the necessary connection cables, phone filters and an installation CD which guides you through the installation.
How to Install
The first step to installing NetZero's DSL service is installing the software on your computer. Inserting the installation CD will cause the installation program to run. You then plug the phone jack filter into your home phone jack, which allows the jack to be used for both DSL Internet and telephone service. You can then plug your DSL modem into the phone jack filter and use the yellow Ethernet cable to connect the DSL modem to the computer's Ethernet jack. Then, plug in the power cord of the DSL modem and use the Internet.
USB Option
If your computer doesn't have an Ethernet connection, you can still use NetZero's DSL service. You need to get a standard USB 2.0 cable -- a cable with a rectangular USB connector at one end and a square connector at the other. Then, you can plug the square end of the cable into the DSL modem, and plug the USB end into a USB port on the computer.
