The development of Skype software changed everything about making a phone call. Not only can users make international phone calls for free, but Skype software can be used for video conferencing, chatting, file transfer and instant messaging. Because these processes utilize software to work, you will be connecting through your computer and the Internet, but that doesn't mean you need a landline to use Skype.
Internet Connection
Skype is Voice Over Internet Protocol software that allows the user to take advantage of computer features such as phone calls, video and messaging. You'll need an Internet connection to do this, but it does not have to be a landline connection. With Internet technology improving and changing all the time, it is no longer necessary to have a phone line plugged into the back of your computer in order to connect to the Internet and access your Skype account.
Using a Landline Phone
Some users enjoy the inexpensive communication they can get with Skype, but don't like to have to sit in front of the computer just to make a phone call. Skype phone calls, video messaging and conferencing require the user to use a headset connected to the computer. If you won't be utilizing the video feature and just want to make a phone call, you can get an adapter at most electronics stores that will allow you to connect your landline phone to your computer and access your Skype account to make a simple phone call. You connect the adapter to your computer through a USB port, and then connect your phone and your landline (from your home's phone outlet) to the adapter. The process also requires installation of driver software on your computer for the adapter.
Calling Landlines from Skype
Just because you won't necessarily be connecting your Skype account through a landline doesn't mean that you can't call landlines through Skype. You can call a landline phone or even a mobile phone using Skype for as low as 1.2 cents per minute, as of the time of publication. The price you pay depends on whether you purchase credits or a subscription.
Skype to Skype
Video conferencing, file transfer and instant messaging plus the fact that you don't need to connect to a landline are all great benefits of the Skype service. The biggest selling point, though, is the free Skype to Skype advantage. It doesn't matter whether you're calling your best friend across town or you aunt in Europe, if you are calling from your Skype account to another Skype account, the call is free. This is a valuable advantage for businesses as well as individuals who have contacts worldwide.
