More than 2 billion people use the Internet worldwide and 8.0 percent of them do so over fixed broadband subscriptions, according to a 2010 survey by ITU World Telecommunications. One of the reasons Internet use is growing so aggressively is the use of DSL technology, which allows users to get broadband Internet speeds over the same copper cables used by their landline telephone.
Can I Connect My Phone To a DSL Modem?
If you have ADSL, asymmetrical DSL -- the most common of DSL technologies -- you can connect your telephone directly to the ADSL cable through DSL splitters or into a DSL modem if it has in-built splitters. The splitters limit the spectrum bandwidth your phone uses so you can make a call and be online at the same time.
What Is The Fastest Connection A DSL Connection Can Get?
It depends on the DSL technology you use. ADSL, the most common in residential installations, has a maximum downstream rate of transfer of 6 Mbps, although providers often cap this to around 1.5 Mbps. More advanced DSL technologies, such as ADSL2+ and VDSL2 can reach speeds of 24 Mbps and 100 Mbps, respectively.
Should I Use a Surge Protector for My DSL Modem?
Like with most electronic equipment, a thunderstorm can fry a DSL. So, if thunderstorms are common in your area, you should connect your modem to a surge protector. Some surge protectors may reduce your Internet connection, however, so check your connection speed before and after connecting your modem to a surge protector.
Will I Have to Upgrade My DSL Modem Regularly?
You won't have to upgrade your DSL modem regularly. DSL modems are not like operating systems or antivirus programs, which need regular upgrading. Even if the DSL technology used on your connection changes, your current modem should be able to handle it. If G-Lite DSL, a new DSL technology that allows different providers to use the same modem, becomes commercially available, you may have to change your old model. Also, if you move to another area, or to another provider, you may need to buy or rent another DSL modem type.
