AT&T; offers several different methods to connect to the Internet. One of these connection methods is DSL. AT&T; DSL service comes in one of four tiers, ranging in speed from 768 kilobits per second to 6 megabits per second. After you purchase this service, you receive a DSL modem from AT&T.; If you're unfamiliar with broadband Internet access, you may find it difficult to know whether or not your DSL modem is connected.
Step 1
Check that all of the required cables are inserted into the correct jacks. Cables to check include the phone line from your telephone wall jack to the modem, the power supply and the Ethernet cable. Tighten all cables going into the modem, Ethernet or phone jacks and electrical sockets. If you use a phone jack that also supports a telephone, a DSL filter must be installed into the jack.
Step 2
Follow the Ethernet cable plugged into the modem and check that it's also plugged into either the "WAN" port on your router if you're using one or into an active Ethernet port on your computer if you don't use a router.
Step 3
Look at the front of your modem. If the "Power," "Ethernet" and "DSL" lights glow a solid green, then the modem has successfully connected to the Internet. After turning the modem on, you may have to wait up to 70 seconds for these three lights to turn solid green. If the "Power" light blinks after at least 70 seconds have elapsed, double-check your cable connections, and turn the modem off and then back on. If the "Ethernet" light continues to blink, check your Ethernet cable connections. If the "DSL" light continues to blink, check the cable connections and make certain a DSL line filter is in place.
Step 4
Launch your preferred Internet browser. Navigate to a website. If you're still unable to connect to the Internet, contact AT&T; technical support.
Tips & Warnings
- Your modem must have at least three solid green lights to have a working Internet connection. The light labels may differ slightly between models, such as "Link" instead of "Ethernet."
