Many people are giving up satellite TV and turning to the Internet for free and low-cost entertainment. It is possible to have the best of both worlds with a PCTV card. This is a device that turns your PC into a satellite TV receiver that can pick up nearby satellite signals, allowing you to view them on your computer. This method of viewing satellite TV on your PC is legal, and best of all, barring the purchase of some equipment, it's free.

Step 1

Purchase a PCTV card. Look for an external device that plugs into your USB port; otherwise, you may need assistance installing an internal card. Check the device's system requirements to make sure it is compatible with your computer.

Step 2

Follow the instructions included with the PCTV card to install both the hardware and any accompanying software on your computer. The card you purchase should include a CD-ROM disc that includes a driver and software that will allow you to operate the card and view the television signal.

Step 3

Follow the instructions provided with the software to set up the device. The device will scan the airwaves to find available channels and display them on your PC. You should be able to access hundreds of channels, including sports, lifestyle and entertainment channels. Follow the user guide provided with the software to select your favorite channels and view the schedule.

Tips & Warnings

  • An internal PCTV card tends to be less expensive, making it a good option for those who know how to install internal PCI cards.
  • Be wary of "Free Satellite for TV" software packages that are offered online. Although these types of software work, they do so by stealing the signal from satellite providers. This is piracy, and it is illegal. Legal versions of this type of software generally charge a subscription fee. It's not free, but it is generally less expensive than a satellite TV subscription.
