All wireless Internet services require that you use your computer with an adapter. Some of these adapters can be installed internally, while others require a USB port so that an external adapter can be connected. Verizon offers a service called Mifi. A device about the size of a credit card allows users to connect to up to five computers or smartphones at once.

Wireless Internet services offer a variety of speeds, with quicker speeds typically costing more money. Speed is measured in Mbps, which describes how much data is transferred per second. The higher the number, the faster the speed. Most services offer speeds between 5Mbps and 7Mbps, though some companies, such as Sprint and Verizon, offer speeds up to 1.4Mbps.

Wireless services have data caps, which means that only a certain amount of information can be downloaded or uploaded per month. This is measured in gigabytes (GB). Most services offer at least 5GB of data transfer per month and some offer more. Verizon Mifi offers a package which allows for 10GB per month to be transferred. Exceeding your data limit in a month results in extra fees.

Different packages come with different monthly prices and most customers will have to pay additional fees, as well. Providers typically charge an activation fee to get your wireless Internet up and running. Most companies require that customers sign a contract and if they choose to cancel early, a substantial termination fee will be assessed. Adapters also represent a one-time cost.
