If you want to file a complaint about your natural gas service, there are certain steps to take in order to get your issue addressed in the most efficient manner possible.
Your first action should be to contact your natural gas service provider's customer service department to try and resolve the issue. This number is always available on the natural gas service provider’s website, or on your bill. While it may be frustrating to be kept on the phone and transferred between multiple people when trying to resolve your complaint, this will undoubtedly be faster than taking further steps with regulatory agencies.
If your natural gas service complaint is not satisfactorily resolved, depending on the state that you live in and whether or not you live within city limits, the complaints process could be handled by one of a few entities. If you live within city limits, it is likely you may have to first submit your complaint with city officials. Otherwise, complaints are typically handled by a public utilities commission or a similar regulatory body. After you have filed your complaint, the correct regulatory agency will gather facts from you, the gas company in question, and any other appropriate parties. These facts will be analyzed, applicable laws and rules will be applied, and a decision will be made. All parties will be informed of the decision, with the details explained, as well as any corrective action that needs to be taken. Any corrective action will be monitored to completion. Any issues which pose an imminent threat to public safety are prioritized.
If you file your complaint with city officials, and are unhappy with the resolution, the next step may be to appeal the determination to the appropriate state-level agency.
