Time Warner is a media and entertainment company that at one time used to control Time Warner Cable but they are are now two separate companies. Through various acquisitions, Time Warner Cable offers Road Runner high-speed Internet service to its customers, paying Road Runner a portion of its revenue. You do not have to subscribe to Time Warner Cable's cable television services to get Road Runner high-speed Internet.
How Road Runner Works
As a cable broadband Internet service, Road Runner runs through existing coaxial and fiber cable lines used for television signals. Cable Internet service gives you an "always-on" connection, meaning that you have an Internet connection at all times. Road Runner download speeds start at 3 Mbps; upload speeds are typically slower for all broadband Internet providers.
Road Runner or DSL
If you are able to get Road Runner service where you live, chances are that DSL, or Digital Subscriber Line, is also an option for you. Both types of broadband Internet are faster than dial-up Internet service, and both offer a constant connection. DSL runs through existing telephone lines but on different frequencies so, as with Road Runner, you can use your telephone while you are on the Internet.
Benefits of Road Runner Service
Your Internet connection speeds with Road Runner can be among the fastest available, depending on what your Internet use habits are and your budget. The basic service of 3 Mbps is fine for most e-mail and web surfing. Heavier use or multiple users may require upgraded service. Road Runner Broadband Extreme offers speeds of 30 Mbps. Time Warner Cable also offers a wideband service, separate from Road Runner, that claims 50 Mbps. You need to check with your local Time Warner Cable to see if these upgraded services are available in your area.
Disadvantages of Road Runner Service
Cable broadband Internet service is shared access, meaning that multiple users can be on the same network. This can cause slow-downs during periods of heavy or peak use. Depending on your usage and habits, this could be an issue for you, particularly if you subscribe to the basic, lowest-speed service package.
