How to Compare Satellite Television Packages

The market for satellite television includes many service providers, each with a large menu of packages and features. Choosing the service that best fits your needs can be a daunting task. The key to making a wise purchasing decision is understanding your own viewing habits. This understanding will prevent you from buying more than what you require. The sales departments of satellite television providers would be more than happy to sign you up for an expensive premium package full of extras, whether you need it or not.

Step 1

Write down a list of three to five priorities for your television service. Include your favorite shows or types of show. You may want lots of sports options or lots of news options. You may only watch a handful of channels all the time. Know your viewing habits before looking at any plans.

Step 2

Open a web browser. Using tabbed browsing, navigate to the home pages of satellite television providers. Direct TV and Dish Network are the industry leaders in America while World TV offers channel lineups from all over the world.

Step 3

Go to the plans and pricing sections for the satellite television providers. Keep your priorities list in sight while you browse the different packages. Look for packages that have everything you need and nothing more. When two plans appear identical, look at their prices.

Step 4

Read the fine print for any packages that seem to meet your requirements. Determine whether there are any service contracts, deals that will expire after a certain time or features you don't plan on using.

Tips & Warnings

  • High-definition services require a television capable of displaying HD images. Be careful not to pay for a service you can't receive.
  • Stay within your budget as you shop and compare packages. Hundreds of channels may sound enticing, but they're wasted if you only watch a handful of them.
