Comcast offers a variety of Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) for new and existing customers. These DVRs offer different features and benefits to suit the needs and budgets of a diverse base of customers. These DVRs are available from Comcast for an additional monthly fee and may not be available in all service areas.

DVR Technology

Digital Video Recorders capture the digital television signal delivered by the cable or satellite service provider. The signal is then stored on the DVR's internal Hard Disk Drive (HDD), allowing the customer to view the recording at their convenience without any loss of signal quality. Unlike traditional VCRs, the DVR does not require bulky and fragile VHS tapes for recording. A DVR also offers a variety of features and options that aren't possible with a VCR.

DVR

Comcast offers a basic Digital Video Recorder capable of automatically recording up to 45 hours of programming in standard definition. This DVR also has the ability to record multiple programs simultaneously while the consumer watches a previously recorded program, or to record one live program while the consumer watches another. Using the Comcast onscreen guide, the DVR can be set to record a single program or broadcast. The DVR can also record an entire season of the customer's favorite shows using the Smart Series Recording feature.

HD DVR

The HD DVR has all of the features of the standard DVR along with a variety of extra options and benefits. The HD DVR acts as a High Definition tuner, eliminating the need for a High Definition cable box or external HD tuner. The HD DVR can record up to 60 hours of programming in High Definition, or up to 300 hours of standard definition programming. In select service areas, the HD DVR can also be used to provide Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound for a home theater system.

Comcast and TiVo

Comcast offers customers the option of adding TiVo service to their Digital Video Recording package. TiVo offers enhanced recording and search functions for customers who have a Comcast DVR. When a program is selected for recording, TiVo can automatically search for an HD broadcast of that program and record it instead. TiVo also automatically updates the television schedule, so selected programs will be recorded even if their broadcast time changes. TiVo offers customers the ability to manage their DVR schedule from any internet-connected computer.
