Comcast uses cable technology to deliver TV programming to subscribers while Dish Networks uses satellite technology. Both services have benefits and limitations and so the provider you ultimately decide to subscribe with will depend on your preferences. Customers evaluating a video subscription to either Comcast or Dish Network should consider cost, programming, features and requirements before making a selection.
Cost
Comcast and Dish Network offer competitively priced packages for customers considering new service. At the time of publication, Dish Network's basic package was on a promotion for $24.99 for 12 months. Comcast's basic package was on a promotion for $30 per month for 12 months. Comcast has a triple-play bundle that allows subscribers to combine digital TV, digital phone and high-speed Internet service for one monthly fee on one bill. Dish Network allows customers to add home phone service and high-speed Internet to a satellite TV package, but these services are offered by separate providers.
Programming
When it comes to programming, Dish Network has packages with more programming choices than Comcast. Comcast's Digital Premier package offers over 200 digital cable channels where Dish Network's "Everything" Pak gives subscribers access to over 315 channels. Both providers offer premium channels like HBO, Starz, Showtime and Encore. However, Dish Networks gives its subscribers access to several SiriusXM satellite music stations where Comcast does not. Dish Network claims it has the most high definition channels in the industry. At the time of publication, the provider had an offer for "HD FREE for Life" to any subscriber of a package above the Dish America level.
Features
Dish Network offers a Video on Demand service to subscribers with movies in 1080p resolution. Subscribers must pay to rent movies and connect the receiver to a phone line or home broadband. Comcast has an On Demand feature that provides subscribers with several free movies, recent music video releases and television series at no extra cost. Subscribers have the option of purchasing premium movies On Demand for a fee. Comcast also offers movies in 3D and an app that allows subscribers to record and watch On Demand movies on a smartphone or media tablet. Dish Networks has a similar service called TV Everywhere.
Requirements
Dish Network requires a long-term contract to establish service whereas Comcast does not. Dish Network customers must install a mini satellite dish on premises to view programming and have a clear view of the southern sky. Comcast subscribers do not. You must be at least 18 years old to establish services with either provider and agree to the terms of service.
