How Do I Hook up an HDMI Cable?

With the emergence and evolution of high-definition technology, high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) cables have become the standard in connecting input and output HD devices. Unlike video component or S-video connections, HDMI has the ability to transfer video and audio signals through the same cable. Whether you are hooking up a computer, television or gaming console, using a HDMI cable will deliver both high-definition video and crisp audio.

Step 1

Locate the HDMI port on the input and output devices. Common input devices include television sets and projector screens. Common output devices include gaming consoles, camcorders, laptop computers and cable boxes.

Step 2

Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the "HDMI IN" port on your input device. Since the HDMI is "keyed," meaning it can only go in one way, make sure the tips of the HDMI cables match the ports before inserting.

Step 3

Insert the other end of the HDMI cable into the "HDMI OUT" port on your output device.
