How do I Lock an HDMI Cable?

by Alice Godfrey, Demand Media

HDMI cables rely on friction to keep the plug inside the HDMI socket. To prevent the cable from being accidentally pulled out, use an HDMI cable that has a locking device attached to the connector. An HDMI locking cable can be obtained at an electronics shop or computer store and does not require any tools to install. You will be able to disengage the HDMI's locking device at any time, should you wish to do so.

Step 1

Turn off the electronic device (for example, a DVD player) that has an HDMI cable attached to it. Rotate the electronic device so that you can see the back panel where the HDMI cable is connected.

Step 2

Pull the HDMI cable out of the connection on the electronic device. Pull the other end of the HDMI cable out of the other electronic device (for example, a TV) that is is attached to. Place this HDMI cable aside.

Step 3

Hold the HDMI cable with the built-in locking device by one end. Rotate the plug at the end of the cable so that the button built into the end is facing up.

Step 4

Press in on the button. Insert the connector into the back of one of the electronic devices.

Step 5

Push the connector in as far as it will go. Release the button. Repeat this procedure with the other end of the HDMI cable and the other electronic device.
